Visual innovation in DuPont™ Surlyn® for new Lalique fragrance
Its creation, by the French plastic injection molding company VPI, is part of a design concept proposed by Lalique Parfums for a new fragrance that celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of the renowned artist René Lalique. According to VPI, it also represents a new level in terms of the visual innovation achievable with Surlyn®.
1860 saw the birth of René Lalique, the artist credited with revolutionizing the glass-making profession and making the perfume bottle into an accessible art object. A century and a half later, and Lalique Parfums is paying homage to René with the creation of its new fragrance ‘Fleur de Cristal’. With women and flora being two themes dear to the artist, it was entirely natural for Lalique Parfums to dedicate this new line to women, and for the lily of the valley, and its delicate bell-shaped flowers, to form its focus, both in terms of the scent itself and the visual presentation of the bottle.
A distinctly modern bottle
The technical challenge in the design brief proposed by Lalique Parfums to VPI and its partners was to create the effect of the bell-shaped flowers floating in a crystal-clear ring. Familiar with the material from previous applications, Surlyn® PC 2000 was the immediate choice of VPI in order to obtain the required levels of transparency and purity required for the collar throughout the shelf-life of the perfume bottle. The challenge for the development team lay in the encasing of the white flower heads, molded from a specially-developed compound based on DuPont resins, within the Surlyn® collar. “This unprecedented innovation was possible through a strong partnership between Lalique Parfums, the molder VPI and DuPont who developed together an entirely new tri-injection molding process for its creation,” commented Jean Miconnet, project manager at VPI.
A total of 19 life-sized flower heads (with an average diameter of just 6 millimeters) are dispersed within the collar, which measures 70 millimeters in diameter and has a thickness of 17.5 millimeters. Several months of development were required to optimize the multiple injection process and to perfectly encapsulate the molded lily flowers whilst maintaining their fine detail and avoiding any deformation. The sensual round lines and elegant curves of the bottle itself is rounded off aesthetically with a metallic cap, overmolded in Surlyn® and engraved with the Lalique Parfums name.
