Fraunhofer IKTS presents eneramic® energy system at Fuel Cell Expo in Tokyo

The eneramic® system is a user-friendly and light-weight electricity generator for camping and outdoor activities which can be operated with commercially available liquefied petroleum gas from pressure cylinders or cartridges.

The eneramic® fuel cell system is a small generator that converts liquefied petroleum gas into electricity. The process is much quieter, more efficient and cleaner than in conventional, engine driven generators.

The system is equipped with a ceramic solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) by which a very simple, cost-effective and robust system design can be realized. Another advantage is that it neither requires extremely pure fuels nor a water management system as other fuel cell types.

The eneramic® fuel cell system has a continuous power output of 100 Watts which in combination with a buffer battery is enough to cover the typical demand of electricity during camping. The eneramic® fuel cell system can be used as a portable generator for all kinds of outdoor and camping activities where electricity is needed. It can also be installed in a caravan or a recreational vehicle.

By placing the components intelligently as well as applying the Fraunhofer patented multilayer principle, the size of the active core of the system was successfully reduced to a very compact volume of about one liter resulting in low heat losses.

The developers have already exceeded the target parameters in terms of performance and efficiency. The eneramic® fuel cell system currently undergoes lifetime and cycle tests in Fraunhofer laboratories on the component level as well as in complete systems. The automated system operation was also successfully demonstrated.

The development of the eneramic® fuel cell system is funded by the Fraunhofer Future Foundation that uses license revenues to foster Fraunhofer internal research and development towards marketable products.
