At ACHEMA 2012 FIZ CHEMIE and its exhibition partners, WTI and TIB, present technical information

Visitors to ACHEMA, the international exhibition and convention for chemical technology, environmental protection and biotechnology in Frankfurt, can experience how exciting and entertaining it can be to solve challenging technical questions in chemistry and technology.

FIZ CHEMIE, the Scientific and Technical Information Center (WTI) in Frankfurt and the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) in Hanover invite you to their shared stand B43 in Hall 9.2 for an interesting quiz. The solutions sought embody in-depth technical knowledge of a chemical and physical nature. Participants will find the answers to their questions through their own searches using online information sources made available and the exhibits at the stand. Find the right answers and a small surprise awaits you.

The exhibition partners provide their sophisticated information services particularly to clients in research departments in science and the commercial sector. At ACHEMA 2012, FIZ CHEMIE will exhibit a number of products from its range: the ChemgaPedia e-learning platform; the ChemInform, SPORE and Infotherm databases and the digitized publication Chemisches Zentralblatt. The TIB Hanover will exhibit its GetInfo information portal. The WTI Frankfurt will offer information on its technical databases, particularly the new database TEMotive.

At ACHEMA, FIZ CHEMIE will demonstrate its specialized databases ChemInform Reaction Library (CIRX), Solid Phase Organic Reactions (SPORE) and Infotherm and present ChemgaPedia, its comprehensive e-learning platform. Both ChemgaPedia and CIRX feature a new user interface with new functions. The digital version of Chemisches Zentralblatt will reveal how information available from 140 years of research progress can be enhanced by digitizing and new search technologies. FIZ CHEMIE encourages customers and those interested to use ACHEMA to express their wishes and contribute their suggestions for further development of the information services.

The CIRX and SPORE reaction databases offer organic reactions particularly selected for synthetic chemists. These databases can be searched using drawn structures or substructures as well as by bibliographic information, reaction types or experimental conditions. Researchers use the reaction databases particularly for developing new pharmaceuticals, but also for other compounds such as dyes or crop protection agents.

The thermophysical database Infotherm supports the daily work of process engineers with technically tested thermodynamic and physical properties of compound mixtures and pure substances. The database includes about 96% of data published in the literature since 1919. Nearly 500,000 tables and graphics for about 21,000 substances in pure form or mixtures are available for retrieval.

ChemgaPedia will have a new look at this year´s ACHEMA. FIZ CHEMIE has added new functions to the modernized layout of this highly popular online encyclopedia, which is accessed over 500,000 times each month. The redesigned interface incorporates the findings of comprehensive user surveys. The new look and simple navigation is intended to make learning with ChemgaPedia easier as well as more intuitive and interactive for the primary target group of students at universities and in secondary education. The free platform offers around 1,700 learning modules with 18,000 individual pages of material for teaching and learning. In addition to full text search, topical “learning paths” have been created to make it easier to locate specific content and find one’s bearings in the wealth of information. The facilities for independent study have been expanded with new comment functions and interactive options. At ACHEMA, FIZ CHEMIE will use a model of a fuel cell and an electrostatic generator to show how the learning modules in ChemgaPedia can provide knowledge for practical use.

Also at ACHEMA, FIZ CHEMIE will present the professional visitors to the trade event with the digital version of Chemisches Zentralblatt with its search mechanisms using the technology of today to unlock technical knowledge from 140 years of research progress. From 1830 to 1969, the publication was the most important reference resource for chemistry. FIZ CHEMIE has digitized all its content and, together with its research and development partner InfoChem GmbH in Munich, prepared the information so that it can be accessed with all the retrieval methods relevant to chemical research and patent searches. In addition to full text searches of 140 years of chemical documentation, the contribution of InfoChem enables information to be accessed using searches based on full or partial structures.
