World's First IEC 61850 Edition 2-Certified Substation Automation System
The substation automation system Sicam PAS by Siemens is world's first system of its kind to be certified to IEC 61850 Edition 2.
This enables network operators and energy suppliers to integrate not only protection devices of various manufacturers in Sicam PAS, but also devices from other areas of application like Power Quality that comply with IEC 61850 Edition 2 requirements.
In addition, energy suppliers using the certified Siemens system can expand their Edition 1 substation with Edition 2 systems and future-proof them. Just under two years ago, the Siprotec 5 protection devices from Siemens were world's first to receive the certification according to IEC 61850 Edition 2.
With the certification of the client implementation of the Sicam PAS substation automation system, Siemens closes this gap in Edition 2.
IEC 61850 has become a constant for substation automation now and is more than only an Ethernet-based protocol.
With Edition 2, it advances into further power supply areas, because it defines engineering processes, data and service models, the conformity test and the entire substation communication. This expands the application spectrum of the certified devices and systems.
The Sicam PAS substation automation system from Siemens was tested in the laboratories of DNV-GL (Det Norske Veritas – Germanischer Lloyd) in Arnhem in the Netherlands and is certified according to the regulations of the UCA (International Users Group), a nonprofit organization of network operators and manufacturers based in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.
Siemens is not only supporting its users by providing state-of-the art products and systems, but also driving standards such as IEC 61850 with its expertise.
A very early and long term leading engagement is provided to introduce and continuously improve and extend activities on IEC 61850, to define and support testing procedures resulting in UCA certificates and also to define and support international interoperability tests.
