As Central Europe’s first scientific conference on AI for application in industry and logistics in particular, “AI24 – The Lamarr Conference” connects science and business on the regional, national and international stage. The conference will take place on September 4 and 5, 2024 in cooperation with “Zukunftskongress Logistik” in Dortmund’s Westfalenhallen. Highlights of the two-day program include keynotes by internationally renowned experts from research, business and politics, the presentation of the “Lamarr Award” to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Sebastian Thrun as well as panel discussions and workshops on current developments, global trends and innovations for AI application in industry.

Providing a compass for the present and shaping the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) – this is what the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence stands for as the organizer of “AI24 – The Lamarr Conference”. With its commitment to interlinking science and industry, the Institute provides impetus for the development of innovative solutions based on scientific progress in the field of application-oriented AI.

The Lamarr Institute is organizing AI24 in cooperation with the “Zukunftskongress Logistik – 42. Dortmunder Gespräche”, which has been successfully established in Dortmund for over 40 years and this year focuses on the industrial application of AI under the guiding theme of “Industrial AI & Logistics”. At the same time, the “IN2AI” trade fair, organized by Messe Dortmund and dedicated to the transformation of industry and logistics through Artificial Intelligence, will take place in Dortmund’s Westfalenhallen. Participants of AI24 have free access to the IN2AI trade fair.

The combination of events offers exciting starting points for new contacts and mutual inspiration at various levels: Researchers benefit from the opportunities for interdisciplinary scientific exchange and networking, decision-makers from businesses and start-ups receive impetus for AI innovations, representatives of industrial companies can discover AI-based solutions and find competent contacts.

International AI expertise from research, industry and logistics

The first day of AI24 will start with the presentation of the first “Lamarr Award” after welcoming speeches by the directors of the Lamarr Institute, Dortmund’s Lord Mayor Thomas Westphal and the Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Ina Brandes. This year’s award honors the internationally renowned pioneer in the fields of AI, robotics, autonomous driving and digital education: Sebastian Thrun.

The rest of the program will provide the stage for topics related to cutting-edge AI research and its application in business, focusing on generative AI, the use of AI in industry and logistics and AI education for the next generations. The first day of the conference will conclude with an evening event in the atmospheric setting of the Phoenix des Lumières, organized in cooperation with the Economic Development Agency Dortmund, which will also provide the setting for the presentation of the “Digital Logistics Award”.

Journey of discovery into the diverse applications and potential of AI

The second day of the conference will also offer participants exciting impulses from various specialist disciplines and key topics as well as the opportunity for intensive networking. After the opening by Hendrik Wüst MdL, Minister-President of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, keynote speeches from the fields of Artificial General Intelligence and AI in Astrophysics will follow.

The afternoon will feature a wide-ranging program with parallel themed and workshop sessions in which participants will be given an in-depth introduction to various current AI application areas and solutions: Attendees of AI24 will meet the Lamarr Institute’s “Fellows” – six outstanding AI researchers from North Rhine-Westphalia – and gain exciting insights into current AI research from NRW. There will also be sessions on topics such as robotics and specific applications of AI in logistics and in the natural sciences, such as physics and the life sciences with a focus on pharmaceuticals. Other key topics include instruments for regulating Artificial Intelligence like the European Union’s “AI Act”, the use of “Foundation Models” and “Large Language Models” as well as sustainable and explainable AI.

The program will be presented in English, the entire event will be simultaneously translated into German. Tickets for the two-day conference are available at a price of 190 euros at: https://www.lamarr-conference.org/tickets/.
