Data Management Goes Mechatronic
Score another advance for mechatronic integration. The new interface between EPLAN and Productstream Professional allows mechanical, electrical and fluidic engineers to manage data in tandem rather than in parallel during project development and implementation. All three disciplines now integrate well when compiling parts and bill of materials (BOM) information.
In Productstream Professional, all project data are captured in a central project structure and managed in a clearly laid out manner. With the new interface, EPLAN project data can be managed on the same server as MCAD construction data from programs such as AutoCAD Mechanical and Inventor. When coupled with the “Access Control Manager” for rights management, all project data are centrally located and accessible while enjoying the highest degree of protection against unauthorized use. Using drag-and-drop, users can easily transfer existing data from EPLAN Electric P8 and EPLAN Fluid. A corresponding assistant in the PDM system supports direct importation. When starting EPLAN projects, particular document types are available that can then be opened with the corresponding EPLAN application.
Central parts management
The bi-directional interface also offers users the option to perform parts management in Productstream Professional that would be otherwise executed in the CAE system. Since the parts created in EPLAN are also be displayed in the PDM system, BOMs can be generated and managed independently of the CAE system. All parts data such as part numbers, suppliers, manufacturers as well as the BOM data are now available to all departments and disciplines.
Bills of materials
Productstream Professional shines with its simple and well-arranged management of all project data, especially with its object parameter bars characteristics lists and multi-level BOMs. The former assist in the systematic assignment of components and component assemblies to higher-ranking classes. In addition, multi-level BOMs with function/mounting location structure can be transferred. The data become transparent to all users. The proliferation of component variants becomes clearer. The result is faster and higher quality project planning on the basis of established standards and data uniformity.
Conclusion:
The new interface between Productstream Professional and the EPLAN platform builds bridges between the mechanical, electrical and fluidic engineering functions. The interface mechatronically connects the data maintenance preparation and storage of these disciplines.
