Siemens modernizes power supply for German TV broadcaster ZDF
Siemens will construct an autonomous control system to control and monitor the entire power supply. All work has to be performed without interrupting broadcasting operations, which means the power supply must be maintained at all times.
The scope of delivery will include medium-voltage switchgear for power input and distribution, Siprotec 5 protection relays and a power control system with numerous telecontrol units. Siemens will also replace parts of the medium-voltage wiring and carry out the civil engineering works. The contract is worth about €4 million. All of the systems are expected to go into operation by the end of 2017.
For TV broadcaster ZDF, a secure power supply is crucial for ensuring problem-free broadcasting operations around the clock. That's why the power input and distribution at Broadcasting Center 1 in Mainz-Lerchenberg are being replaced and renewed.
The task of monitoring the power network will be assigned to an autonomous energy management system. Power flows, power monitoring and switching operations can then be analyzed and controlled from a central location. The existing remote system control will have to be stripped down and converted to suit the new power control system.
To provide a secure and reliable power supply, Siemens will supply 48 panels for the NXPlus C medium-voltage switchgear, eight panels for the 8DJH medium-voltage switchgear, more than 130 Siprotec protection devices of the Siprotec 5 and Siprotec Compact types, a telecontrol system consisting of Sicam RTUs, and the Sicam 230 grid control system.
