Cross-border Criminal Law – a Symposium with European Commissioner and German Minister for Justice

How Europe‘s judges and state attorneys are to cooperate and how citizens and human rights are to remain intact, isn’t clear. Searching to solve these problems and thus ensuring better legal certainty, is the subject matter at an international conference named “Criminal Justice in Europe: Challenges, Principles and Perspectives” on 22 and 23 October in Luxembourg.

High-ranking politicians such as the German Minister for Justice, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, European Commissioner for Justice, Viviane Reding and Luxembourg Minister for Justice, François Biltgen, as well as renowned scientists and European judges like Marc Jaeger, President of the European Union Court will attend the conference.

The conference is organised by the “Institut Universitaire International Luxembourg” (IUIL) and the University of Luxembourg, and will take place in walking distance from the European Court of Justice in the heart of the EU quarters on Kirchberg. The aim of the participants at the symposium is to find ways to strengthen European Justice. Researchers see this as the best way out of legal uncertainty. “We have to make justice more independent and strengthen it toward the police, better control cross-border cooperation and above all train judges and attorneys to better manage new challenges”, Prof. Dr. Stefan Braum, penologist at the University of Luxembourg and co-organiser of the conference, explains.

The Luxembourgish EU judges therefore plan to build up an “Ecole de la Magistrature” (School of Magistracy), that will ensure training and continuing education of jurists. The conference, such is the organisers’ idea, is to lay the cornerstone for this school.

The complete programme can be downloaded at http://upload.iuil.lu/cj/brochure.pdf. The symposium speeches and debates will be translated into English, French and German simultaneously. Registration is possible until October 18th. Further information available from Raphaël Briche, Tel. +352 -26.15.92.37, or Evelyne Engler, Tel : +352 -26.15.92.17.
