“Lasers in Composites Symposium” in Aachen – from Science to Application

Although the laser processes for lightweight construction applications developed in research have already been tested, the step towards industrial application has not yet been completed. This is because potential users still do not know enough about the possibilities for using laser technology in the field of composites.

To counter this, specialists from the field of laser technology and process development would like to contribute to a deeper understanding of this technology in the first “Laser in Composites Symposium” in order to present new possibilities to potential users.

In eight English-speaking specialist lectures, these specialists will inform executives and production engineers as well as stakeholders from the fields of laser and processing technology, design and automation about the potential of laser processes for lightweight construction in the automotive industry, aviation and electromobility.

There are numerous ways to apply lasers in the production of components made of composite materials: for example, they can be used for cutting, ablation and drilling of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) and prepregs or for joining dissimilar materials, such as FRP with metals.

Also in the field of thermoplastic tape laying, lasers have advantages over conventional methods. Experts will present these processes as well as the associated possibilities for process control and quality assurance at the symposium.

Forming Networks and Experience Applications Live on the Lab Tour

The symposium will offer experts from science and industry the opportunity to exchange ideas in discussions about the current state of research as well as perspectives and future tasks of the laser processes for lightweight construction applications. On the final tour through the Fraunhofer ILT and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Engineering IPT laboratories and through the hall of the AZL, the participants can experience the processes live and make contacts with potential partners.
