Fraunhofer IPMS integrates High Speed IrDA protocol stack in small SSOP28 package

Furthermore, there are also other applications requesting wireless high speed data links like data logging and monitoring systems in industries and medical engineering. Today, data rates are available up to 16 Mbit/s. In addition to the powerful IrDA IP solutions, the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (IPMS) announces a high speed IrDA stand-alone controller in a small SSOP28 package.

The IPMS_IRHSP IrDA controller supports all IrDA data rates from SIR, MIR, FIR up to VFIR (16 Mbit/s). The controller includes the bigger part of the IrDA protocol stack. That means, all IrDA layers from IrPHY to IrLMP are implemented.

For system integration, only few additional components have to be supplemented in order to implement a powerful, high speed wireless data link. Necessary resources become smaller compared to pure software solutions. Additionally, the IPMS_IRHSP IrDA controller has the possibility to bypass the IrLAP and IrLMP layer to adopt i.e. MS Windows IrDA stacks directly. So, the IrDA controller is able to support all current application layers like IrSimple, IrOBEX or IrCOMM. Furthermore, it includes a Remote Control feature that enables the user to work with different RC codec’s beside IrDA using only one Ir-transceiver. And it has an adaptive clock control algorithm for low power consumption. So, the IPMS_IRHSP IrDA controller provides high speed wireless data links for numerous portable and low power devices in consumer electronics, industrial applications and medical engineering.

Now, engineering samples of the IPMS_IRHSP IrDA controller are available.
