Alleviation for hydrocephalic children – CMT presents new brain pressure implant at the IVAM booth during Compamed 2006
“The brain pressure implant is an alternative to pressure measuring catheters in clinical treatment”, states Matthias Wenzel from CMT. “An external unit sends the brain pressure data continuously to a clinical monitoring system.
Since there are no cables, the patient is completely separate from the monitor and can move freely”, confirms Wenzel. If the clinical tests under everyday life conditions work, patients could be treated at home quite soon – a ray of hope especially for infants who suffer from hydrocephalus.
If the brain liquid does not circulate correctly, this can lead to hydrocephalus. For therapy, drainage systems are implanted, which drain surplus liquid. Due to frequent dysfunctions, the process must be supervised stationary. With the new gauge from CMT the brain pressure data is transferred wirelessly to a unit carried on the body. The scalp is closed after the implantation, which prevents infections.
The exhibitors of the IVAM joint pavilion High-tech for Medical Devices can expect visitors from all over the world at Compamed, which is embedded in the medical trade fair Medica. Companies and institutes that would like to exhibit with IVAM or take part in the forum can contact Katrin Manka (km@ivam.de; Tel.: +49 231 9742 7081).
