Hybrid Fluorescent Nanoparticles with Outstandingly High Light Intensity

Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have successfully developed low-cost, fluorescent dyes with especially high light intensities. These inorganic–organic hybrid dyes can be synthesized easily and isolated, stored and redispersed in common solvents (ethanol/water). They can be excited using blue light (UV or blue light from LED) and emit depending on their composition in the blue, green, red or infrared spectrum. Preferred are applications in the field of medical diagnostic and therapeutic, advertising material and safety equipment (fluorescent marker).

Alzheimer Disease: New Target Structure for the Development of Pharmaceuticals

At present about 18 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer disease, a neurodegenerative disorder which leads to dementia. The pharmaceuticals currently registered for the treatment of Alzheimer are only able to reduce symptoms marginally and delay progression of Alzheimer disease to a limited extent. The novel preventive target structure, the APP-AICD/ Fe65-PTB2 complex, offers a new chance for the development of a possible pharmaceutical for a causal treatment of Alzheimer disease.

This system was specifically designed for individuals with pre-eroded teeth, can however also be used for all other indications of tooth-colored restorations.

Method for direct formamide or acetamide for-mation of adamantane derivatives

This invention offers a new method for the direct and halogen-free formamide or acetamide formation of adamantane.
The adamantane modifications are chosen to enhance lipophilicity and stability of drugs, thereby improving their pharmacokinetics. Amido- and amino admantane derivatives can be used as drug delivery systems. They are able to overcome the blood-brain barrier and are competent to penetrate into the fatty tissue.
Due to these properties adamantane derivates are already used as therapeutics (e.g. for neurodegenerative diseases) and cosmetics. They are, for example, used as antiviral drugs or to treat Parkinson?s as well as Alzheimer?s diseases.
