Study of Environmental Protection System Implementation in Lithuania
The University of Klaipeda together with its project partners (BioCon Valley Germany and Pomeranian Medical University Poland) is implementing the „Eco4Life – South Baltic Network for Environmental and Life Sciences to Boost Cross Border Cooperation” project, one of the targets of which is to familiarise with the “Green hospital” concept and the possibilities of its appliance in Lithuania.
This year’s May 15th a study tour to the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre in Vilnius, the only one Lithuanian healthcare institution withISO 9001and ISO 14001 standards and having a “Bureau Veritas” certificate is planned.
The Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre is a leader in life sciences area and it is providing various healthcare services, from interventive treatment to early disease diagnostic. The aims of the Centre healthcare with minimising environmental impact assessment policies is to provide the patients (Centre clients) with only the high quality and safe healthcare services, to work with maximum safety, to be a patient-, employee- and environmental-friendly institution and to constantly improve its healthcare and environmental protection quality management.
The trip is being organised for Western Lithuania healthcare institutions, Region administrations and life sciences representatives. The aims will be to familiarise with the ISO 9001and 14001 certification procedures, to discuss the positive aspects of the certification and the difficulties of the management system implementation. At the time of the meeting with the Centre representatives the relevant questions will be discussed, such as the options of the waste and wastewaters management, microbiological pollution control, optimisation of the energy use, maintenance of the safe working environment. The Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre managers will also share the experience of how the environmental protection management system has been implemented, how the environmental protection programme was prepared and what indicators are showingthe results of the management system being present.
