Anticancer Agent – Targeting a novel oncogene in the treatment of cancer

The trim71 gene encodes for the human multi-domain protein TRIM71 which is required for the development of several vertebrate and invertebrate organisms. It plays an important role in the regulation of cell differentiation and cell-matrix interactions.

The present invention shows the significant role of TRIM71 in the proliferation of cancer cells. TRIM71 is scarcely expressed in healthy adult tissues, but strongly up-regulated in human cancers, especially in cancers of the ovary, the lung and the kidney. It is involved in the control of cellular interactions and cellular differentiation within the tumour microenvironment and obviously functions as an oncogene. TRIM71 might therefore be a target to reduce the progression of human neoplasia.
