Auxetic Structures: Intelligent structure for reduction of the weight of building elements
Our daily perception and experience teaches us that if we
pull on a building element then its cross-section becomes smaller and the element itself longer. This phenomenon is described physically by Poisson's ratio μ. It is completely contrary to our everyday experience that when we pull on a building element its cross-section increases. Yet Auxetic Structures have precisely this characteristic; they possess a negative Poisson's ratio μ. The result is that the building element has fascinating structural characteristics which on this scale have to date been regarded as unachievable.
