System for combined diagnosis and therapy using high energy particles
Treatment with high energy radiation is a generally recognized method in cancer therapy. Instead of high energy radiation, particle therapy uses accelerated charged particles, such as protons or heavy ions (e.g. carbon). The difference between particle therapies in comparison to conventional radiotherapy is the deviant penetration behavior of the particles. The novel system provides the unique possibility of combined diagnosis and therapy by means of ion beams.
