Siemens to Start Up the First Cannibal Solids Reduction System in Europe,at the Levico Terme Wastewater Treatment Plant in Italy

The plant, in a city of about 100,000 people, wanted to significantly reduce its solids production by at least 50 percent, from 740 ton/year to 370 ton/year. Besides reducing the costs of hauling biosolids to a disposal facility, the Cannibal system can reduce the plant’s power and labor costs from aerobic digestion and dewatering systems.

The treatment process at the plant will be as follows: the wastewater influent will undergo primary treatment, then biological treatment, secondary clarification and filtration. Mixed liquor from the secondary clarification stage will be sent to the Cannibal solids separation system. Non-degradable trash and inert material will be separated from the biological solids and disposed of, and the screened mixed liquor will be either recycled to the main biological treatment stage or sent to the biological interchange tank. The plant is designed to treat a flow rate of 11,000 cubic meters per day. Siemens, which was awarded the contract for the Cannibal system in February 2007, also provided a control system for the process.

Cannibal is a trademark of Siemens and/or its affiliates in some countries.
